Podium position for 12-year-old Sky at Olympic qualifying event

Skateboard GB skateboarder, Sky Brown, took 2nd place at the Dew Tour Skateboard Park final on Sunday (23rd May 2021) in Des Moines, Iowa, USA, putting her right on track for Olympic qualification.

Sky laid down one of her best competition runs of her career on Sunday afternoon to give her a high score of 58.50 and putting her firmly into the 2nd position. She had sat in first place for most of the final, but missed out by just 2 points, as Sakura Yosozumi (Japan) scored 61.71 in her final run. Earlier that weekend Sky had finished in 2nd position in the semi-finals to earn her a place in the finals.

At only 12 years of age, Sky is the youngest competitor on the international circuit and is currently ranked 3rd in the world overall. In her last international competition in Rio De Janeiro, she took the bronze medal. However, Sunday’s performance proved how she has continued progress her runs and difficulty of tricks.

Dew Tour was the last international Olympic qualifying park competition of the season and Sky now looks almost certain to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games this Summer, which would make her one of GB’s youngest ever Olympians. Team GB and Skateboard GB are poised to make the team announcement on 1st July, once World Skate announce the final qualifying athletes.

James Hope-Gill, CEO at Skateboard GB, said “We are hugely proud of Sky’s achievement at Dew Tour. She has amazed us all and has continued to get better and better throughout the Olympic qualifying season. This is her first international competition in over 18 months and she has proved that she is one of the best in the world”.

Sky was joined by her fellow team mates Alex Hallford, Alex Decunha, Jordan Thackary, George Poole and Bombette Martin competing throughout the weekend.
