Skateboard GB x Habito National Championships 2022 Announced

Skateboard GB are happy to announce that the Skateboarding National Championships will be held at The XC Skatepark, Hemel Hempstead, on the 9th and 10th April and at BaySixty6 Skatepark, London, on 23rd and 24th April 2022.

This year introduces a new format for the championships, with the Park (in Hemel Hempstead) discipline and Street (in London) discipline being split into two separate events with qualifying events and finals being held over two different weekends.

Skateboard GB's 2021 National Championships had to be restricted to 32 competitors (8 for each discipline) due to the covid guidelines which were in place at the time. This year’s competition will be first National Championships which will allow public applications since 2019 (due to the cancellation of the 2020 event).

Skateboarding saw its debut at the Tokyo Olympic Games last year, with GB’s Sky Brown taking the Bronze medal at the games, which helped catapult skateboarding into the mainstream media. Since the games Skateboard GB have launched a pilot talent pathway in the UK at four skatepark hubs across the country. It is expected that skateboarders in the pilot will compete at the event, in addition to an increased number of other skaters.

James Hope-Gill, CEO at Skateboard GB said: "We are really excited to be hosting the National Championships once again. The new format over two weekends will be a great introduction to allow focus on the separate disciplines and will add more vibrancy to the competition as we will be able to increase the amount of skaters taking part".

Abba Newbury from Habito commented “We can’t wait to be back for our third year, helping to host live, public skateboarding events once again. It doesn’t get bigger than the National Championships! Multiple dates, two great locations, many more skaters and live audiences, are sure to make this the biggest competitive event in the UK’s 2022 skateboarding calendar. The growth of the competition this year demonstrates the sport’s exploding popularity over lockdown, and will help celebrate all the amazing home-grown skateboarding talent we have here in the UK .”

The competition will be broadcast live on BBC iPlayer, BBC Red Button and the BBC website from 6 pm on Sunday 10th April 2021 and Sunday 24th April at 6pm.

Skateboard GB's 2022 National Championships are kindly supported by Habito.
