Inaugural Skateboarding National Championships launched in the UK

Skateboard England have announced that their first Skateboarding National Championships will be held in April 2018.

In August 2016, the IOC announced that skateboarding would be included in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. As a response to being part of the Olympics and the need for a specific qualification route for GB skateboarders, Skateboard England are creating the National Skateboarding Championships.

The National Championships is proposed to be an annual event that will initially be held over two weekends in April 2018 in which the top adult male and female skateboarders from the UK will compete to see who is crowned champions in Street and Park.

Lucy Adams, Chair of Skateboard England said “We are delighted to be launching the National Championships. Interest in skateboarding is growing and we’re excited that BBC Sport have already committed to including coverage of the National Championships across their online media channels.”

The National Championships for Street Skateboarding will be held at the Mount Hawke Skatepark in Truro on 14th & 15th April 2018.

Ciaran Ryder from Mount Hake said “Everyone involved at Mount Hawke are incredibly excited to be chosen as a host venue for the inaugural Street National Championships. This event will allow the best riders to showcase their talents and inspire future generations into skateboarding. We are grateful to Skateboard England for their support and look forward to seeing you all down in Cornwall.”

The National Championships for Park Skateboarding will be held at the XC Skatepark in Hemel Hempstead on 28th & 29th April 2018.

Henry Thomas said “Dacorum Sports Trust XC is very happy to see the National Championships come to Hemel Hempstead and we hope to provide a great platform for everyone to enjoy the UK’s top skateboarding competition in 2018.”

In the first year, entry into the National Championships is by invitation and skaters will be selected based on their current competitive performance to ensure the highest level of competition. Skaters will be invited by Skateboard England to take part via team managers, skateparks, sponsors or other appropriate channels.
